Alright, this is entry number one of trying to do something new. I realize often that I should be spending more time actively listening to the music that I already know I like, becoming an even more diehard fan, if you will.
Simultaneously, I want to make an effort to revisit music I haven't listened to in a long time -- and to assess what I think of it now.
This is an attempted effort to go through every album/single/EP/etc in my iTunes library. Although I haven't done the best job of keeping it appropriately stocked in the last 5 years or so, I really lived in my iTunes library for the decade of my teenage years, a bit of time before, and a few years after. There was always a sense that if I put something in my iTunes library, it was something I wanted to seriously listen to. At one point in time, the moment I added it to my library, I really believed in it. And so, I want to see if I still believe in all these things I put in my library over the years -- much of which I know I have not listened to or particularly resonated with or thought of in a long time. But nonetheless, I intend to see its value and ask myself if there's more to it than I had previously considered (which I have a feeling there always will be).
Before I talk about this song, there's one last detail about this process. I'll be going through my library in alphabetical order, but I'll be skipping repeat releases from the same artist. And then, if I manage to make it all the way through A-Z, on my 2nd round through I can digest those next releases from the repeat artists. I'll also hopefully get in a flow of asking routine questions about the music, my expectations, my reaction, etc.
Expectations: What do I know about this song?
I have never heard the original, am unfamiliar with Abhi & Dijon, but however, do remember quite specifically enjoying Dpat and Atu around 2012/2013 -- they were both in that space of "classy" instrumental hip hop meets electronic meets almost a tinge of the sad undertones of future garage like Burial, with those big breathe-y emotive ambient parts. And also, good sound design. I must have downloaded this song from soundcloud -- ahh, the soundcloud days. It's been at least 10 years since I checked that place regularly, or much at all. But I used to!
I remember the vocal sample and a little bit of what one of the synth melodies were like, I remember the atmosphere. I think I will like the song. I have a feeling the drums will be good, or I hope so, some nice hi-fi tasteful stuff.
How was it?
Fantastic. Amazing amazing mix and production. And a wonderful slightly somber emotive quality. I forgot to mention that we need to throw in "R&B" into the genre tags here -- but this whole mix of things I described and artists like Atu and Dpat -- I associate it a lot with the "Soulection" label in the 2010-2015 era. I'm not sure if there is a name for this type of movement, but I always bumped into it on soundcloud as a sort of adjacent scene to the more bass music focused liquid dnb/dubstep, future garage, IDM ish stuff I was more initially immersed in.
I loved that the song had a nice sounding slightly stereo CLAP, a nice RIMSHOT, AND a nice Snare. the drums really were fantastic and thought provoking as well as gorgeous. This is just class A production. Wonderful. Dpat and Atu. The organic feeling vinyl crackle-y texture along with the gorgeous piano and vocals and guitar all pull you in invitingly.
What instruments did I hear?
Electronic/sample based drums, Piano, Lead Vocal, ad-lib/backing vocal, Guitar lead, electric piano, occasional dreamy synth, bass synth(s)
What didn't I remember about it?
Most importantly, I was surprised to remember the feeling of the mood and atmosphere. Somber and peaceful and beautiful, yet sophisticated. Galimatias' Luna Soul EP came to mind as music with a similar quality.
I also noticed the lyrics... "there's nothing wrong, before just a little bit more" "If there's something going wrong, tell me -- you gotta let me know". The "tell me" line wasn't yet defined before this listen. "I can see right through you" " I can be that to you" "you just gotta tell me what to do". Steamy!
Does it stay in the library? Would I recommend it?
Yes! Though, I may be more inclined to point someone towards Atu's "♥(V)" (2012) or "Pictures on Silence" (2013) and Dpat's "In Bloom" (2013). Also, Stwo's "Beyond EP" (2013) and IAMNOBODI's "Needs and Wants and Habits" (2013) or "Elevated" (2013).
I'm feeling quite fond about all these artists and what they accomplished at this time.
